A member recently presented me with her dilemma: two offers in one day after a long drought. Position A is in her industry but the position is administrative (and she's seeking something to advance her technical skills). Position B ticks all her boxes - prestigious company; will provide excellent experience; will build her CV towards her longer term career goal; will greatly expand her network.
The choice seems obvious! However Position A offers a package double that of Position B, and Position B is for 6 months only. There is no room for negotiation.
She's at an early stage in her career. We spent a bit of time unpacking her "Mission Possible" in Stage 2 of the Roadmap in terms of what she wants. Her attraction to Position A is because of financial stability and job security, whereas Position B gives her everything she wants except those two factors. We also examined longer-term career prospects in each of those positions.
After a fruitful discussion her choice became clear. If she wants to be true to her mission, she needs to take a leap of faith and accept Position B. Because that's where her passion and future lie. And that's exactly what she's going to do!
